So in the past two days, Something in the house has:

    1. Sampled my new trail mix? Or at least left the bag wide open on the counter when it had been tied shut. The wire twisty is now nowhere to be found. Joe thought nothing of it at the time, as he'd assumed that I'd been snacking on my (brand new) mix.

    2. Turned my iPod on. I thought at first Joe's phone was ringing or something, but no. The iPod that I'd put on the bookcase hours earlier had spontaneously started blaring Crying Nut's "Grasshopper."

I don't know what this means except that some spectral third roommate enjoys hippie nosh and K-punk. At least I can't fault its taste. XD

What do ye think, flist? To seance or not to seance?
    noctiluca: (unbelievable)
Dreamt that I was moving up to the top floor of my building, which in the Dreaming was the fourth, into a spacious and many-roomed flat that had one incumbent roommate, male, who gave me a quick tour of the place as I was dragging in the first couple armloads of my stuff. He was v. serious but quiet, which I liked, since it probably meant that he'd stay out of my way.

When he showed me the mudroom (we had a mudroom), I saw that just about every inch of available surface was occupied by his shoe collection and felt enormously concerned that he might judge me for my own modest assortment of sneakers, boots, and flipflopsx2.

I realized that this moving business would take manymany trips up and down two flights of stairs if I were to do it all on me lonesome, so I sent out a tweet seeking assistance from my friends. Only minutes later, I realized to my horror that Warren Ellis had somehow highjacked my Twitter account and had sent some highly inappropriate tweets to my contacts and strangers alike. I was convinced that everyone would think me horrible and strange and cut off all association at once, but then Sarahtron and Colleen appeared to help me move.

At some point, Sarahtron asked, "Aren't you going to be sad and lonely with Joe moving out of state?"

To which I replied, "No, we have Skype and text messages and all that telecommunication stuff," and was about to add that at least now we were in the same-ish time zone when I realized that I had no idea where Joe had gone. o.o

    ---------

This is probably a result of my vague anxiety re: possibly moving again, and possibly being long distance with Joe again. Possibly possibly possibly. Really wishing that I had a better idea of what my life is going to look like. C'mooon, grad school! Tell me things I wish to know. :T

I'm gon' try to get back into the habit of boring ye with records of my daily minutiae, starting with this post. Hokai, so.

My desk, which I only just straightened, is slowly being taken over by crafting supplies. My laptop is even now in danger of being overrun by paper cranes. I lost count, but if I had to venture a guess, I'd say that I have about 50? My chair is an island in a sea of yarn, stamps, ink pads, card stock, paper punchers, stickers, and a lone paper cutter. I really need to figure out an organizational system that extends beyond Shopping Bags on the Floor.

All of this began as last year's resolution to follow craftsy pursuits, and this year's resolution to get into card-making, starting with thank you cards to the folks who wrote me letters of rec for my grad school application and culminating in the most fucking magnificent Hallowe'en cardapalooza you have ever witnessed.

In unrelated news, my hamster is a weirdo.

Okay, so here's a picture of Escha's epic adventure cage (on the right):

We bought it for him because he kept punching Ragnar in the nose until he bled. We didn't want to reward this behavior, but he got depressed in the tiny!clear!unfun cage to which we originally rehomed him, and he loves running more than anything else, AND we are squishy-hearted about small rodents, SO.

For those who have never encountered hamster cages before: the big green round thing is Escha's wheel, which glows in the motherfucking dark and spins around on the purple track when he runs to grant him the illusion of getting somewhere.

Recently, Joe and I found tiny heaps of white powder on top of Escha's cage, which kind of freaked us out. My Google-fu unearthed someone with a similar issue, who had been told that the powder might be calcified urine, or a reaction between urine and and some plastics used by hamster cage manufacturing companies. We were satisfied with this answer (as there are gaps in Escha's wheel that allow him to spray seed shells and shit all the fuck over everything, so why not pee). Either that, or suspect Escha of producing cocaine.

BUT THEN, while wiping the rim of the track, Joe found a fucking NOTCH in the stabilizer where the wheel bracers would occasionally get stuck. The powder was PLASTIC SHAVINGS. Escha had CARVED A CHUNK OUT OF HARD PLASTIC by runningrunningrunning in place. WHAT THE FUCK, ESCHA.

Conclusion: Escha is a tiny, hamster-shaped engine.

Movies I saw for the first time in 2011. )

    TV-wise:
  • Sherlock, season one — So good.
  • Game of Thrones, season one — So pretty.
  • True Blood, season four through episode 6 — I don't know why I do this to myself but I do.
  • Dexter, seasons 1-4 — Love love love.
  • Veronica Mars, season one — Actually quite fun!
  • American Horror Story, season one through episode 9 — Maybe we are just masochists.

Joe and I also made it partway through the first seasons of Mad Men and Camelot before giving them up for dead.

Pretty much. Except for the dog, which I cannot support, and Ireland, where I've already been (I do plan to return, but probably not this year). Here are s'MOAR:

  • Have a regular writing schedule: I'm thinking 2pm–4pm daily, except for Wednesdays, which will be my Media Days. Now that I have a (semi-)regular work schedule, I really have no excuse not to just buckle down and keep to a schedule.
  • Always have something out to submission.
  • Blog and e-socialize MOAR. Be better at commenting.
  • Eat better, jaysus. Less sugar, smaller portions, nothing after 8:30pm. Leafy greens :c
  • Get back to working proficiency in my various divinations
  • Get out of the house more.
  • Join SFWA!
  • Don't panic.

    1. What did you do in 2011 that you'd never done before?
Moved in with my partner, lived in a sorority house, got a matching tattoo with six other people, knitted things, gave a public reading, got (and gave up) an apartment in a different state, played in the snow in summer, had an IUD (Mirena) implanted, first HPV outbreak x.x, went a week without eating meat.

    2. Did you keep your new years' resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Yes/no, and yes. "Never, never, never, never give up!"

    3. Did anyone close to you give birth?
    Not really.

    4. Did anyone close to you die?
My old housemate, Jeff, whom I also met this year but wasn't very close to.

    5. What countries did you visit?
Moved back to the United States from Korea in March, if that counts. Also visited Canada (Vancouver) in June with Joe.

Not sure that I lacked very much in 2011 :)

    Everything. Everything.

    9. What was your biggest failure?
Still no more pro pubs :T

Joe, for graduating, and my mum, for going back to school!

I wish I'd kept up with taekkyeon exercises and yoga.

"I can get by with a little help from my friends."
    noctiluca: (rabbit)
I've just realized that this is my very first American New Year's Eve away from my biofam! It's a little weird. I always went back to my parents' over winter break while at uni, except that one winter in 2007 when I was in Ireland. And after graduating, I was always out of the country: last year, I went out with friends in Seoul, and the year before that, I went with friends to Osaka and Tokyo (from Jeju).

Not sure what I'll be doing tonight; a friend invited Joe and I to a shindig at his place, but I'm superstitiously afraid of his house ._. And my co-worker invited us to a hot tub party, but I don't think I have any swimwear. Not terribly keen on hitting the bars in IC, so it'll prolly be a quiet one in with our modest DVD collection, pizza, and whiskey and/or the makgeolli my mum was kind enough to bring us last week.

In the meantime, let us review my success rate on last year's New Year's Resolutions:
    1. Read more. Probably? Considering I actually had easy access to English-language books. I did not, however, keep track of my reading as I'd wanted to.
    2. Write more. Again, entirely possible, but hard to quantify.
    3. Train harder. lol nope
    4. Eat healthy. Hahahahaha
    5. Stick with my planner! Nope. :c
    6. Connect better. I think so! For a while, anyway.
    7. Do craftsy things. Yup. Got back into origami for a little while, and I learned how to knit. Though I only finished one scarf, a scarf that I frogged to do a mobius cowl thingy, one arm warmer, and a hat.
    8. Chill out. Alas, no. If anything, I stressed out more. :T
    9. Kick ass and take names. Difficult to quantify. But I like to think yes. :)
